The landscape of wellness constantly evolves, incorporating both new and timeless principles. One such principle is ‘mindful eating,’ a practice that has ancient roots but holds relevance in today’s fast-paced lifestyle (Pollan, 2009)¹.
Eating mindfully involves being fully present during meals, appreciating the tastes, textures, and aroma of our food, and responding to physical hunger and satiety cues, rather than emotional triggers (Harvard Health Publishing, 2021)². This practice encourages a more balanced relationship with food, reduces binge eating and aids in weight management (Mayo Clinic, 2018)³.
In our busy lives, we often resort to ‘mindless eating,’ consuming food while working, watching TV, or scrolling through social media. These distractions prevent us from fully engaging with the act of eating, leading to overconsumption and reduced satisfaction (Van Dyke, Drinkwater, 2014)⁴.
By practicing mindful eating, we can create a healthier relationship with food, leading to a host of benefits. Reduced stress, improved digestion, increased satisfaction, and better weight management are some of the potential benefits (Mayo Clinic, 2018)³.
Mindful eating is more than a diet plan; it is a shift in perspective towards food, eating, and overall wellness. By incorporating this practice into our daily lives, we can enhance our physical health and overall well-being.
Remember, wellness isn’t merely the absence of illness; it’s a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being (WHO, 1948)⁵. Let’s start embracing this comprehensive view of wellness, beginning with mindful eating.
